Friends - Camming Device Shop

What to do when rock climbing in places where there are no bolts and runners can't be placed? This is where camming devices come into play - more commonly known as cams. Spring-loaded camming devices (SLCDs) are often called cams as well, or "Friends". Being able to correctly place these types of mobile anchors ensures that one can climb safely in terrain with few or no existing anchor points. Cams and friends require cracks and stable rock that they can be placed in, as well as practice and strong nerves, since placing such mobile anchors safely is not easy. In most places it is advisable to use a combination of both types of cams (spring-loaded and single-piece). Placement options may vary, and redundancy can be life-saving.

Hexes

A hex (Hexentric), as the name implies, is a hexagonal metal prism (shaped much like a metal nut) attached to a short piece of wire or cord and designed to be wedged into v-shaped cracks to prevent falls when rock climbing. One of the main advantages of this type of camming device is its light weight and lack of moving parts that can break.

Cam Types and Shapes

Camming devices come in many different shapes and forms. However, they can be devided into three main types: half-moon-shaped ("Rocks"), half-moon-shaped with an indentation in both wide contact faces ("Wallnuts"), and Black Diamond's famous asymmetrical Hexentrics, perfect for wide cracks! To fit the varying crack sizes one can buy single cams of different sizes, or complete camming device sets. To ensure that the rope glides properly it is best to supplement cams with quickdraws and/or webbing runners. When buying a cam set it is a good idea to buy a Nutkey as well, since removing cams can be difficult without it.

Friends

Friends: Used for parallel cracks. Origin: USA. Inventor: Ray Jardine, aerospace engineer from Colorado. This data covers pretty much everything you need to know about the revolutionary spring-loaded camming devices called Friends. The rock climbing safety devices were christened "Friends" by Jardine in the 70s, and they are still sold under this fitting name today.

With some practice it is possible to place Friends using only one hand. Hereby it is still most important to pay attention to the shape of the crack and to use the appropriate size. There are up to 12 different sized Friends, similarly to other camming devices.

Placing Friends And Cams

As mentioned above, placing cams takes some practice. One should make sure that the cam rests flatly against the walls of the crack and supports itself. Pulling downward gently fixates the cam somewhat. The same rules apply for placing cams and Friends (SLCDs): Always make sure to let the crack dictate the size! Make sure that a Friend's four cams rest in the optimum angle relative to each other, which is around 90 degrees. Check out our cam test reports and other books on cam use and placement for further information on the topic.
