The passion: How it all began
It all started with a hobby: mainly mountaineering and mountain biking and a passion to account and pass on some handy tips of a worthy trail. In 1999, long before Bergzeit.co.uk became the well-known Outdoor Shop that it is today, company founder, Klaus Lehner, acquired a ski touring portal with lengthy publications of tours that he, personally had completed.
Shortly after, an extension of the portal was created, with digitized maps from Kompass and soon followed by hardware – the first being an Altimeter and cycle computer named HAC4 from Ciclo – these were initially stored in the attic, which in 2003 expanded to a storage facility and a shop in Grosshartpenning, Germany seeing the first of the Bergzeit employees take root. Proving that an enthusiastic passion can be the driving force of an interminable success story!
Grown-up: From touring portal to outdoor retailer
It’s been some time since Klaus Lehner worked on his passion for outdoors alone: over 200 employees are now supporting Bergzeit, which has been focusing for more than ten years on high quality clothing and equipment in the domains of mountain sport, outdoor and travel.
On the 1st October, 2015, Klaus Lehner stepped down as Managing Director and passed on the reins to Maximilian Hofbauer – an experienced manager and longtime expert in the outdoor industry. He takes on a stately legacy: Bergzeit currently offers approx. 50,000 products from over 600 outdoor brands and from all over the world – from A for Arc’teryx to Z for Zimtstern.
A new central warehouse was completed in Otterfing in November 2017, with over 8,000 square meters of floor space and 56,000 storage spaces. An ideal set-up for Bergzeit employees to take care of storage, orders and shipping of goods. On average, 3,000 parcels on an average are shipped each day, and up to 7,000 at our peak times.
For all Bergzeit product queries, our customer service team represents competence and can be contacted via phone, e-mail or chat. The central administration building houses our other numerous sports-enthusiast colleagues – ranging from product management, marketing, our magazine editorial staff, IT and accounting – together with logistics there are currently 175 in total.
In the south of Munich and Europe
Founded in 1999, Bergzeit GmbH is at home in Bavaria, just south of Munich. In addition to the Bergzeit.co.uk, which extends to Austria, Switzerland, UK and a further ten countries, there is also the opportunity to visit a Bergzeit store “LIVE” on your way to the foothills of the German Alps. In the 3 stores: Munich, Holzkirchen and Gmund on Tegernsee Lake, a total of 36 mountain-active fanatics, whose interests range from; trekking, climbing, mountain biking, skiing etc, are there to advise you.
Bergzeit’s Alpin store in Grosshartpennig, awaits it’s customers with a vast 700m² and with an equally vast selection of clothing and equipment, specialising in alpine mountaineering – from expeditions, trekking & hiking, rock climbing all the way up to ski touring. Having opened its doors in autumn 2010, the Outdoor Center in nearby Gmund, dominates its 2,000m² retail store in summer with functional clothing and Accessories for your mountain bike and in winter all things related to skiing. Exciting events and activities can be found regularly in all stores – such as the barefoot running day, Bergzeit’s Movie Night or Bergzeit’s Alpine day. Talks given by top athletes such as Benedikt Böhm, Stefan Glowacz and Alex Huber attract numerous visitors to the stores.
The Bergzeit team: A lot of time spent in the mountains
That headquarter’s location, along with all three stores are in the immediate vicinity of the Alps is no coincidence: The Bergzeit team spends a lot of time on the mountain itself, in summer most are climbing, mountain biking, hiking and in winter they are to be found skiing, ski touring, snowshoe-hiking or freeriding.
After-work evening ski tours and bike meet-ups, relaxed, friendly relations with colleagues and a headquarter office view toward the German Alps, go hand-in-hand when people come together to work for Bergzeit.
The combined expertise and the dedication to outdoor of all Bergzeit employees, can only be of benefit to the customer. Bergzeit, your partner for all mountain and adventure travel the world over.
