Description

The official UK50 series (1:50,000 regional map) provides specific recreational information for contiguous regions of Bavaria.

The maps are based on the TK50 (Topographic Map 1:50,000), which includes a UTM grid for GPS users and terrain features.

The Bavarian Forest National Park and the Czech Národní park Šumava (Šumava National Park)—this “boundless forest wilderness”—are considered the “Green Roof of Europe.” In Germany’s first national park, the motto remains “Let nature be nature.” Information centers—such as the Lusen National Park Center (near Neuschönau) and the Falkenstein National Park Center (near Lindberg/Zwiesel)—offer a first introduction to the park, featuring exhibitions and open-air animal enclosures. In Neuschönau, the famous treetop walk rounds out the experience furthermore. Furthermore, there’s the Forest History Museum in St. Oswald and the forest playground near Spiegelau. But of course, the forest itself is the number one destination. Several primeval forest areas around the Falkensteine mountains await exploration; the major peaks such as Rachel and Lusen (visible in the cover photo from the Czech side) are furthermore among them, as is the rocky hiking area near Mauth. The equally fascinating high moors and alpine pastures (Almen) are accessible via the “Schachten and Filze Adventure Trail.”

The southern foothills are more shaped by culture: the Gläserne Steig connects old glassmaking towns like Zwiesel and Frauenau with their (in some cases centuries-old) glassworks and glass museums. And there’s also history to discover at the open-air museum in Finsterau.
