Alpine Touring Boot Buyer's Guide

Once you have discovered the serene please of alpine touring, it is worth looking into the additional comfort provided by specialized ski boots for the ascent. All alpine touring boots feature two modes for walking and skiing. Switching between the two is easy; on most alpine touring boots one simply needs to flip a switch. Whether you are former ski racer looking for optimum downhill performance or prefer an ultra-light boot for long ascents, you are sure to find the right pair of touring ski boots to suit your needs among the large selection on the market.

Before you begin trying on boots it is a good idea to narrow down the selection according to the following criteria.

Three or four buckles?

The number of buckles on the boot is a good indication for the specific use it is designed for. Alpine touring boots with three buckles usually weigh less and have a shorter shaft. These characteristics make the boot more flexible and fascilitate a more natural walking motion on the ascent. Boots with four buckles on the other hand are a bit higher, and provide more stability, control and power on downhill sections. The velcro strap at the top of the boots can be used to further tighten the fit for better power transer, and also doubles as a carrying aid for the boots.

3-buckle AT boot Alpine touring boots : 3 buckles versus 4 buckles

Many alpine touring boots with four buckles fall into the category of freeride boots. Many such models feature interchangable soles, with one for touring and another for alpine skiing. These sole systems coform to ISO norms for touring bindings and alpine bindings and provide a full measure of safety in both binding types. Caution: Alpine touring boots without interchangable soles should not be be used in combination with standard alpine ski bindings since they may inhibit the emergency release function.

What about touring boots with only two buckles?

Ambitious ski tourers and competitors who want optimum performance on the ascent may want to look into ultra-light touring boots like those of the Dynafit TLT 5 series. These alpine touring boots make do with only two buckles (plus the velcro strap) to reduce weight to an absolute minimum, while still providing decent downhill performance.

TIPP: Sizing

When sizing ski boots it is ok for your toes to lightly touch the front of the boot, but there should be no more contact as soon as you bend your knees.

We recommend using boots with four buckles for wide alpine touring skis with a rocker construction, since this type of skis needs a bit more power for the descent to be truly enjoyable.

Weight

Though there are extremely light-weight alpine touring boots on the market, they always come at the expense of reduced stability and downhill performance. Four-buckle boots weigh more than those with two or three buckles, but more buckles let you fine-tune the fit for more precise power transfer. Weight can range from 2.1 kg (e.g. light Dynafit AT boots like the TLT 5), to the 3 kg class (including the Dynafit ZZero3 PX MF 3-buckle boot), and go all the way up to uncompromising 4.5 kg freeride boots (like the Black Diamond 4-buckle alpine touring/freeride boot).

Shells

A diverse range of materials are used by various manufacturers for their shells, decisively influencing a boot's weight and performance characteristics. The two most commonly used materials for alpine touring boots' shells are the Pebax® and PU (polyurethane) polymers. Pebax® is a thermoplastic elastomer that stands out due to its light weight, high elasticity and good insulating qualities in extreme temperatures. Boots with Pebax® shells usually cost around 50 EUR more than touring boots with a PU shell, for this reason. High-end AT boots for racing and competition use sometimes also have carbon-fibre shafts, providing extra stiffness at less weight.

Note: If you plan to use Dynafit bindings, make sure to buy Dynafit-compatible alpine touring boots with inserts near the toes. Boots with inserts can also be used with standard alpine touring bindings without any problems, but not vice versa.

Liners

Alpine touring boot liners can be divided into two categories: Liners with laces, and heat-moldable liners. The latter can be heated using a special machine, and then molded to fit your individual foot shape. Liners with laces are a bit softer and heavier in comparison, but tend to last longer and be more breathable.

TIP: Blister protection

Wearing good ski socks with padding in critical places can help keep you from getting blisters in a new pair of alpine touring boots. It is also always a good idea to carry tape or another form blister protection on long tours.

Women's models

These days many manufacturers also produce women's models of alpine touring boots. These usually have a shorter shaft and a narrower fit, and feature fashionable designs that can be prowdly displayed in the snow. After blasting by the "fit" guys on the ascent, of course.

Ski boot sizes are given in mondopoint, a measure of the foot's length in mm. Find your size in the following size chart:
