Deuter is considered the pioneer and market leader in the backpacking sector in German-speaking countries. Deuter's roots go back a long way: Hans Deuter founded the company in Augsburg in 1898 as a mailbag and sack supplier for the post office. Early on, Deuter focused on the production of backpacks. Since then, Deuter has become an integral part of alpine history. Deuter rucksacks have been exposed to the most extreme conditions and tested to the limit on numerous expeditions - from the first ascent of the north face of the Eiger by Anderl Heckmair in 1938 to the current expeditions of 8000-meter woman Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner. The intense cooperation with extreme athletes and mountain professionals from the international mountain and ski guide associations forms the foundation for the innovations with which the Deuter product development team continues to revolutionize the market. After the first back-ventilated, patented "Deuter Aircomfort" carrying system, which came onto the market in the mid-1980s, numerous other carrying systems followed. Deuter was also the first brand to develop specific bike backpacks. Andi "Anderl" Heckmair, the inventor of the eponymous MTB Transalp route from Oberstdorf to Lake Garda, designed the "forefather" of all cycling backpacks, the Deuter Bike 1, in 1990. Before that, there were simply no backpacks designed specifically for cycling - they were diligently misused. In addition to backpacks, Deuter has also been making comfortable sleeping bags for children and adults for 25 years.

Deuter's eco and sustainability concept
Sustainable action from the beginning to the end of a product's life is a major focus at Deuter. Recycled and sustainable materials are used, the company works with long-term production partners and offers a lifetime repair service. Deuter is a member of the Partnership for Sustainable Textiles and has been a member of the Fair Wear Foundation (FWF) since 2011, which is committed to improving working conditions in local production countries within the textile and clothing industry. Deuter was awarded Fear Wear Leader status for the eleventh time in a row in 2023. When optimizing manufacturing processes, Deuter relies on the bluesign system, the world's strictest protection for environmental protection, occupational safety and consumer protection. In order to meet strict animal welfare requirements, Deuter has only used down and feathers certified according to the Responsible Down Standard (RDS) for its sleeping bags since 2015. The RDS controls the entire production and supply chain from the chick to the finished sleeping bag.
The entire collection PFAS-free since 2020
As only PFAS-free products have been manufactured since 2020, Deuter is setting another example for sustainability and environmental protection. Thanks to an environmentally friendly DWR (Durable Water Repellency) water-repellent treatment, environmentally harmful perfluorinated and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) will be completely eliminated in the future. The new urban UP series from Deuter is not only PFAS-free, the fabrics are also made from 100% recycled PET bottles. In addition to the bluesign standard, the sustainably made daypacks are also certified according to the GRS (Global Recycled Standard) and are the perfect companion for your everyday life.
